The NTT IndyCar Series recently captivated a large audience, both on-site in Washington, D.C., and watching from home, for its Freedom 250 Grand Prix. This high-profile event, held amidst the nation's capital, achieved remarkable viewership figures, setting a new benchmark for the series.

Impressive Viewership Milestones

The broadcast of the event garnered 3.282 million viewers, making it the most-watched IndyCar race, excluding the Indianapolis 500, since the merger of Champ Car and the Indy Racing League in 2008. This figure represents an extraordinary 279% surge compared to the typical viewership for non-Indy 500 Sunday races.

The overall season average for IndyCar has now climbed to 1.875 million viewers, indicating a 32% increase from the previous season and a substantial 70% rise compared to 2024, when broadcasts were handled by a different network. The decision to host the race around the National Mall, commemorating 250 years of American independence, clearly resonated with audiences.

Race Highlights and Championship Implications

Beyond the impressive ratings, the race itself proved to be highly engaging. Kyle Kirkwood, driving the No. 27 Andretti Global Honda, demonstrated exceptional pace throughout the weekend. Despite a minor setback on his final qualifying lap in Turn 1, which affected his potential points haul, Kirkwood quickly seized the lead from Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing on the very first lap.

Although Kirkwood largely controlled the race, late restarts introduced moments of intense pressure, requiring him to skillfully defend his position against challenges from Scott McLaughlin of Team Penske and Christian Lundgaard of Arrow McLaren.

Kirkwood's victory, coupled with a challenging outing for championship leader Alex Palou, has significantly intensified the title race with only three events remaining. The series now shifts its focus to a doubleheader weekend at the Milwaukee Mile, an iconic oval circuit. Following these two events, the 2026 IndyCar season will conclude with a road course contest at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. All three of these crucial races are slated for broadcast on the same major network that aired the D.C. Grand Prix.
