Explosive Drone Discovery Forces Shutdown at Major German Airport, Diverts Flights

An explosive-carrying drone was located near a Ukrainian aircraft at Germany's Leipzig/Halle Airport late Tuesday, leading officials to characterize the event as a "new quality of danger," authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

The discovery necessitated the temporary closure of both runways at the significant European freight hub, resulting in several flights being rerouted to alternative airports.

Shortly before midnight, another flying object was observed in the vicinity, causing additional flight diversions, including a passenger plane, to other airports.

German police initiated a substantial response and commenced an investigation into both occurrences.

Airport Operations Halted After Drone Discovery

Police reported that an airport employee initially found the first drone, which contained an "unknown explosive device," close to the airport's south runway.

An explosives-disposal robot was deployed to examine the device, after which authorities successfully removed its detonator.

The aircraft near which the drone was found displayed the blue-and-yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag and bore the English slogan, "Be Brave Like Kherson," a tribute to the southern Ukrainian region.

In the subsequent incident, an unidentified flying object reportedly collided with a cargo aircraft that had aborted its landing at Leipzig/Halle Airport due to the earlier runway closure.

The cargo plane was then redirected to Hannover Airport, situated approximately 125 miles northwest of Leipzig, where officials later identified minor damage to the aircraft.

Official Reactions and Broader Implications

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the detection of the first drone marked a considerable escalation in security threats.

"Drone sightings, drone threats, including in a hybrid context, are something we know from the past," Dobrindt remarked. "That a drone armed with explosives is at an airport is a new threat scenario."

Dobrindt further described the incident as a "hybrid attack scenario."

He indicated that questions regarding the specific type of explosives used, the drone's origin, and those responsible remained central to the ongoing investigation.

"All the speculation that is currently going on about the explosives, the construction, the question of the drone, the origin and, of course, who is behind it, is now part of the investigation," Dobrindt explained.

"What is happening now also shows that the assessment made months ago — that we are dealing with a high level of danger — was justified," he added.

In June, Dobrindt inaugurated Germany's Joint Centre for Countering Hybrid Threats, an initiative designed to unite federal and state security agencies in addressing various threats, including espionage, sabotage, and disinformation.

Geopolitical Context and Previous Incidents

Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a significant European cargo hub and is home to Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft.

NATO acknowledged being aware of the incidents but directed inquiries to German authorities.

Ukraine's ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, suggested a potential link to Moscow, telling a German television outlet on Wednesday, "Who else could it be but Russia?"

Earlier in 2024, an incendiary device ignited at a logistics center within Leipzig/Halle Airport, resulting in a freight container catching fire. Western security officials at the time suspected this incident was part of a Russian intelligence sabotage operation.
