The suspected leader of a formidable Mexican criminal faction has been taken into custody in connection with the killing of a mayor. Furthermore, officials indicate that new evidence from the case also connects his group to the widely publicized, livestreamed murder of a 23-year-old influencer.
Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known by his alias "El R-1," was apprehended during a coordinated operation involving military forces and law enforcement agencies, according to official reports.
Mexican authorities have identified Álvarez Ayala as the principal figure of Los Rs, a criminal cell with ties to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Officials allege that Álvarez Ayala orchestrated and funded the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo in November 2025. His criminal cell is also reportedly linked to the May 2025 killing of beauty influencer Valeria Márquez. Authorities state that Márquez's former boyfriend is Álvarez Ayala's son.
Details of the Arrest and Criminal Network
Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch provided details of the investigation one day following the arrest. "'El R-1' is recognized as the primary leader of Los Rs, one of the most violent criminal cells associated with the CJNG, operating in Apatzingán, Uruapan, and Morelia, Michoacán, as well as in Jalisco," García Harfuch announced in a statement shared on X.
He further elaborated on the group's activities: "This organization is involved in extortion, murders, and drug trafficking, directly impacting producers, business owners, and families in the region."
The Killing of Valeria Márquez
At the time of her death, the killing of Valeria Márquez was being investigated as a femicide, a legal classification in Mexico for gender-based crimes. Video footage reportedly depicted a man entering a salon, asking, "Are you Valeria?" before presenting Márquez with a gift. The individual then allegedly shot her in the chest and head. Márquez was seen collapsing on camera before another person ended the livestream, according to the video.
García Harfuch stated that Márquez's killing was connected to Francisco, who is alleged to have repeatedly threatened Márquez after their romantic relationship concluded. "This criminal cell allegedly participated under his orders in coordinating multiple violent acts in the region. Among them is the tragic femicide of Valeria Márquez, which occurred in May 2025 in Zapopan, Jalisco, a crime linked to Francisco, the victim's former partner and Ramón Ángel's son," García Harfuch explained.
He added, based on reports, that "With yesterday's arrest, we learned that R-1's son had a romantic relationship with Valeria. He had threatened her on several occasions and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, R-1, to carry out the feminicide."
Álvarez Ayala is currently in custody, while Francisco remains at large. Jalisco authorities have also apprehended another individual accused of involvement in Márquez's murder.
Mayor Manzo's Assassination and Broader Context
In addition to the Márquez case, Álvarez Ayala faces accusations of financing and orchestrating the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo. Mayor Manzo was fatally shot during Day of the Dead celebrations in November 2025. Manzo was known for his vocal opposition to organized crime and his efforts to eliminate corruption within the local police force.
According to García Harfuch, 31 individuals have been arrested in connection with Mayor Manzo's killing. Álvarez Ayala is presently being held at the Altiplano maximum-security prison as federal prosecutors pursue charges. Investigations into both homicides are ongoing.
The U.S. Treasury Department has characterized the CJNG as "one of the most powerful cartels in the world." In July, the department imposed sanctions on over 50 individuals and entities within Mexico that are linked to the organization.
