Geno Smith's Jets Reunion Hailed as 'Hollywood Script' by Ex-Teammate Ryan Fitzpatrick
Former Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick believes Geno Smith's second tenure with the team represents a chance for an improbable comeback story.

Geno Smith is embarking on his second tenure with the New York Jets, a return many hope will unfold more favorably than his initial period with the franchise. Drafted in the second round out of West Virginia, Smith's first two seasons as the starting quarterback saw the team achieve an 11-18 record. His time was notably cut short in 2015 following an infamous locker room altercation, which paved the way for Ryan Fitzpatrick to assume the starting role.
Ryan Fitzpatrick, now a retired player and analyst for "Thursday Night Football," expresses confidence that the Jets are acquiring a significantly different Geno Smith this time around. He suggests this return is perfectly timed for a franchise in dire need of experienced leadership.
From Draft Pick to Journeyman and Back
Smith's career subsequently shifted into a backup capacity, a role many observers anticipated he would maintain, seldom reaching starting status again unless necessitated by injury or team circumstances. A notable moment occurred in 2017 when he started one game for the New York Giants, famously ending Eli Manning's streak of 210 consecutive starts. Following a period with the Los Angeles Chargers, Smith found a new home as a backup to Russell Wilson with the Seattle Seahawks. It was in Seattle where Smith seized his significant opportunity, becoming the team's primary quarterback in 2022 after Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos. His stellar performance earned him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award, solidifying his capability as a franchise offensive leader. Smith secured two Pro Bowl selections during his time with the Seahawks, accumulating over 4,300 passing yards during the 2022 season. However, his journey continued with a trade to the Las Vegas Raiders, where he briefly reunited with Pete Carroll for a single season before moving on.
The Jets initiated their own reunion, acquiring Smith in March in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick. The onus is now on Smith to redefine his legacy with the New York fanbase. Fitzpatrick believes Smith is now well-equipped to achieve this, even as some critics remain skeptical about the team's prospects for the upcoming 2026 season.
A Transformed Leader for the Jets
"The biggest thing he’s gonna provide is stability and professionalism. I think it’s cool for some of the people in the building who were there with Geno in his younger days to see him come back and see how much he’s grown as a person, as a player. That professionalism is something that team really needs," Fitzpatrick remarked.
He also highlighted the impact of players like Demario Davis, noting his sustained high-level performance and professionalism. "Obviously, bringing in a guy like Demario Davis, how he’s still doing it. I mean, you talk about a physical position and a guy who has been as physical as somebody, to still enjoy going out there and thumping heads on every down. He’s also going to bring a professionalism to that locker room, and I like what [head coach] Aaron Glenn did there. These are two pieces, one on offense and one on defense. We’re going to show you what you need to do every single day to become a professional and a good NFL player. I think they’re on the right track there."
Offensive Weapons and Team Prospects
On paper, the Jets possess a collection of talent that Smith can leverage on offense, under the direction of new coordinator Frank Reich. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson, despite playing for a struggling team since his 2022 draft, recorded three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons before injuries impacted his output in 2025. Running back Breece Hall, currently managing a groin injury, is expected to be a crucial component of Reich's rushing scheme. Hall also offers reliable pass-catching ability out of the backfield, providing Smith with another dependable target. The Jets further bolstered their roster by allocating two of their three first-round selections to Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq and Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. On the defensive side, David Bailey, the second overall pick from Texas Tech, is set to be a key player at defensive end.
Smith has the foundational elements for success if the team can foster the right synergy. Echoing a "Hollywood script" narrative, Fitzpatrick is openly supporting his former teammate, hoping he can author a triumphant conclusion to his renewed opportunity in New York.
Ryan Fitzpatrick's Active Lifestyle and Style Partnership
In the coming months, Fitzpatrick will be prominently featured with the "Thursday Night Football" broadcast team, offering his expert analysis on the NFL's early schedule games. This demanding schedule, combined with his family responsibilities, necessitates an active lifestyle. Fitzpatrick has forged a partnership with VRST, citing how the activewear's blend of performance and style perfectly aligns with his daily demands.
"For me, the authenticity of it — it just captures my vibe," he stated. "It’s not just the resort wear, it’s the active lifestyle stuff. The Limitless pants — there’s a lot of stuff that I’m pulled in a lot of different directions whether it’s running to a kid’s soccer game, or driving a carpool, or flying somewhere for ‘Thursday Night Football.’ All the different things I do, to be able to look good and feel comfortable, I think those are the two biggest things for me that made this a no-brainer for this partnership. It fits my active lifestyle and it actually looks good."
Fitzpatrick is recognized for his distinctive vibrant colors and patterns in his "Thursday Night Football" attire, an aspect VRST is assisting him with this season. Regardless of the occasion, he values having comfortable options that also embody contemporary men's style.
"You can wear it in so many different situations. That’s the biggest thing for me," he commented. "I’ll have people come up to me and ask me about the shirts, or ask me about the pants. Look, I just got off a plane, I’ve been flying all morning. I feel comfortable. I’m standing out here at a soccer practice in the same thing feeling great and looking great."
