Connecticut’s Democratic Governor Ned Lamont successfully fended off a primary challenge from state Representative Josh Elliott on Tuesday. Elliott, a progressive, had criticized the incumbent governor for what he perceived as an overly conciliatory stance toward former President Donald Trump, despite Governor Lamont’s own progressive leanings.
Representative Elliott, who represents Hamden, asserted that Governor Lamont was excessively “nice” to Trump, arguing that such an approach was detrimental in the current political climate. “Nice doesn’t solve affordability. Nice doesn’t solve fascism or fight back against fascism,” Elliott conveyed to the Connecticut Mirror, adding, “[Ned] can be nice all day long, but that’s a liability right now.”
In response, Governor Lamont told the same publication that “talk is cheap,” suggesting that Elliott’s proposals lacked substance when compared to the governor’s established record during his nearly eight years in office.
Governor Lamont’s campaign has outlined priorities including advocating for single-payer healthcare and allocating additional resources for early childhood education across the state. Connecticut has increasingly evolved into a commuter hub, serving the metropolitan areas of New York City, Providence, and Boston.
Following his primary victory, Governor Lamont is set to face state Senator Ryan Fazio, a Republican from Greenwich, in the general election scheduled for November.
Connecticut's Shifting Political Landscape
While now considered a reliably Democratic stronghold, Connecticut historically exhibited a more competitive political environment. In the past, the state elected several Republicans to Congress and saw long-serving GOP governors, including John Rowland, who later faced incarceration.
For a significant period between the Reagan administration and 2010, the governorship of Connecticut was primarily held by Republicans. This era concluded when the late Governor M. Jodi Rell chose not to seek re-election, leading to her succession by Democrat Dannel Malloy.
Notable Republican figures from Connecticut’s history include former Senator Prescott Bush, the father of former President George H.W. Bush, who represented the state in the U.S. Senate for over a decade in the mid-20th century. Additionally, Lowell Weicker, a liberal Republican U.S. senator who was a predecessor to Joseph Lieberman, also served as governor in the 1990s under the banner of “A Connecticut Party,” which he himself founded.
