Trump's Endorsement Fails to Save Scandal-Plagued Florida Congressman in Primary Defeat

A prominent endorsement from former President Donald Trump proved insufficient to secure a primary victory for a Florida congressman embroiled in controversy on Tuesday night.

Representative Cory Mills, a Republican from Florida, was unsuccessful in his campaign for a third term representing the state's 7th Congressional District. His candidacy was notably impacted by a House Ethics Committee investigation and reports of an alleged federal probe.

The victor in the contest was Ryan Elijah, who previously worked as an Orlando-area news anchor and a sideline reporter for the National Football League. Elijah resides in Seminole County with his wife, where they raised their two sons, according to information from his campaign.

An Unexpected Outcome

This outcome represents a clear upset against Mills, who had maintained a significant lead in various polls leading up to primary night and had secured what is often considered the most influential endorsement in Republican politics.

Nevertheless, the campaign to remove Mills from Congress had been ongoing for several months and ultimately achieved its objective.

Representative Nancy Mace, a Republican from South Carolina, had previously spearheaded an unsuccessful bipartisan initiative to censure Mills and had even threatened to advocate for his expulsion from Congress, though she later withdrew the latter proposal. Mace also publicly supported Elijah's campaign against the incumbent Florida lawmaker.

Earlier in the month, Representatives Mike Haridopolos and Anna Paulina Luna, both Republicans from Florida, announced their endorsement of Elijah over Mills for the congressional seat in their home state.

Mills, a military veteran, frequently highlighted his endorsement from former President Trump during his campaign appearances, often seeking to downplay the various controversies affecting his re-election efforts.

Congressional Accountability Trend

Mills' defeat places him among a growing number of House Republicans who have faced setbacks due to scandals in recent months. For instance, Representative Chuck Edwards, a Republican from North Carolina, withdrew his re-election campaign following a detailed House Ethics Committee report that accused him of harassing two young female staffers.

House Democrats had previously identified Mills as a potential vulnerability for the Republican Party in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. It remains uncertain whether their strategic focus will shift to Elijah now that he has unseated the embattled congressman.
