Former President Donald Trump paused his remarks on Friday during an event in New York to offer comfort to the family of a 12-year-old boy tragically killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx.
Speaking to attendees at the Nassau County Police Academy, Trump acknowledged Jacob Freytes, who died late last month after being struck by a stray bullet while sitting on his bicycle outside a bodega.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted a video of the moment on social media, describing it as a "beautiful impromptu moment." She noted that President Trump left the stage "in the middle of his speech to embrace Migdalia Martinez and retired NYPD Sergeant Jesus Freytes, whose 12-year-old son Jacob was tragically killed by a stray bullet in the Bronx."
A Moment of Compassion in New York
Before his impromptu gesture, Trump had been discussing his administration's initiatives to reduce crime when he brought up the incident involving young Freytes.
"Two weeks ago, a 12-year-old boy named Jacob Freytes — You read about this one? — was tragically shot and killed by a stray bullet fired by a repeat offender in a gun battle."
He continued, highlighting the boy's family: "Jacob was the son of a loving mom and a retired New York City police detective, and they are incredible people, and I think I heard that they may be with us today. Are you with us?"
Following this appeal, Trump descended from the stage to embrace Jacob’s tearful mother, Migdalia Martinez, and his father, retired NYPD Sgt. Jesus Freytes. He exchanged a few private words with both parents.
Upon returning to the podium, Trump reflected on the encounter, stating: "Incredible. Horrible story. What a horrible thing. But we're going after them. These are bad, sick people."

The death of Jacob Freytes has spurred legislative efforts, with Republicans in the New York Legislature introducing "Jacob’s Law." This proposed legislation aims to impose more severe penalties on individuals whose reckless actions lead to the death of a child.
Migdalia Martinez shared her heartbreaking account of the day her son was killed.
"I gave him a kiss, and I walked out, and we always do a little dolphin kiss. And I walked out and went to work," Martinez recounted. "Around five o'clock, they called me and said that he had gotten shot. And all I could do was try to think of different ways to get here faster. When I got there, I just seen my boy gone."
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Authorities have arrested William Ferrer, 45, in connection with the shooting. Ferrer faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, and has entered a plea of not guilty.
Reports indicate Ferrer has an arrest record spanning more than 25 years, with previous charges including driving while intoxicated, drug possession, menacing, and criminal contempt.
