Michelle Pfeiffer Recalls Feeling "Humiliated" During Initial Audition for Breakthrough Role in 'Grease 2'

Michelle Pfeiffer has opened up about the initial struggles she faced when auditioning for her first significant film role in "Grease 2," describing it as an unexpectedly awkward beginning to what would become a celebrated Hollywood career.

In a recent interview, the 68-year-old actress reflected on her breakthrough part and explained why she characterized her first audition as a "humiliating" experience. She clarified that she entered the tryout with "zero expectations of landing this part," primarily attending because her agents encouraged her to go "just for the experience."

Initial Audition Challenges

Pfeiffer described the audition process as a "cattle call," with a multitude of actors, dancers, and singers present, constantly moving in and out of audition rooms. She noted the thin walls, which allowed those waiting to clearly hear the readings and vocal performances of others. "I was not a singer," she admitted, explaining she was taking voice lessons to improve her stage presence on the recommendation of her acting coach. She also emphasized, "And I certainly was not a dancer."

After completing the singing segment of the audition, Pfeiffer had to participate in the dance portion. She likened the scene to what is often depicted in films, where performers line up behind one another, taking turns to showcase their moves in the front row.

Feeling insecure about her dancing abilities, Pfeiffer recounted how she "kept moving further to the back," eventually finding herself in the very last row. She confessed that she "stumbled my way through because I couldn't remember the choreography."

A Surprising Callback

"I left with my tail between my legs, feeling so humiliated," Pfeiffer stated. However, as she departed the Paramount studio lot, an assistant, whom she believes worked for director Pat Birch, pursued her. When Pfeiffer expressed her embarrassment, the assistant reassured her, saying, "Well, you shouldn't be because she wants you to come back tomorrow."

Ultimately, Pfeiffer secured the lead role of Stephanie Zinone, the formidable leader of the Pink Ladies, in the 1982 motion picture. Unlike its predecessor, which featured a good girl falling for a bad boy, the sequel inverted this dynamic, casting Pfeiffer as the "bad girl" who develops feelings for a "good boy."

Despite Pfeiffer's personal reservations about her vocal skills, many enthusiasts of the film still fondly remember her rendition of the song "Cool Rider" from the movie.

Career Trajectory and Recent Projects

Pfeiffer went on to achieve significant acclaim, notably starring opposite Al Pacino in "Scarface." Her career further ascended with three consecutive Academy Award nominations for her performances in "Married to the Mob," "Dangerous Liaisons," and "The Fabulous Baker Boys."

More recently, the actress has been involved in projects such as "Margo's Got Money Troubles" and Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming series, "The Madison."

Regarding her collaboration with Sheridan, Pfeiffer mentioned his desire to understand her character, Stacy, before writing, and her own need for that insight before committing. "We went back and forth like that for a little while, and it became clear to me I wasn’t going to win this battle," she told an industry publication in March. This prompted her to seek advice from Helen Mirren, who had previously worked on Sheridan's "Yellowstone" spin-off, "1923."

"And she just glowed; she couldn’t say enough nice things," Pfeiffer recalled of Mirren's feedback. "She said the scripts were great, the productions were perfect. She was having the time of her life; she loved Montana. So I took a big leap of faith, and I committed. I thought, 'Well, the guy has a pretty darn good track record.'"
