Former Yankee Mark Teixeira Criticizes MLB for Handling of Pride Night Religious Expression

Mark Teixeira, a former New York Yankees standout and current Texas congressional candidate, has strongly criticized Major League Baseball's management of a recent Pride Night dispute, labeling it a "total disaster" and suggesting it was an attempt to silence Christian athletes.

Controversy at Giants' Pride Night

The controversy emerged earlier this month during the San Francisco Giants' annual "Pride Night" celebration. Several players chose to protest aspects of the event, either by inscribing Bible verses onto the rainbow-colored Pride caps provided or by opting not to wear the caps at all.

Major League Baseball initially addressed the situation with a statement to The Athletic. A spokesperson indicated, "The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations."

Teixeira's Critique of MLB's Handling

Teixeira argued that compelling players to wear hats that conflict with their beliefs constitutes a "PR disaster" for both the league and the Giants organization. He emphasized that these athletes were simply expressing their Christian faith.

"Yep, total disaster, PR disaster for the league, PR disaster for The Giants. You know, these players were just expressing their Christianity. They were forced to do something that they didn't want to do," Teixeira stated.

He drew on his own extensive experience in professional baseball, noting that such contentious issues are typically absent from the sport. "I played in the major leagues for 14 years. We play 162 games a year, we don't have these conversations. We don't take political stances," he explained. Teixeira added that introducing an event like Pride Night and then requiring players to wear specific attire, regardless of official rules, created an appearance of coercion.

Player Explanations and Team Apology

Among the players who spoke about their decision was starting pitcher Landen Roupp. He clarified that the message on his cap was intended to convey "God’s covenant" and was not meant to express animosity toward anyone.

In response to the incident, the San Francisco Giants issued an apology to the LGBTQ+ community. Their statement conveyed regret for the "pain and anger" that members of the community experienced as a result of the events.

Commissioner Manfred Clarifies Stance on Discipline

Republican Senator Josh Hawley publicly defended the players' rights to religious expression in the wake of the controversy. Subsequently, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred informed Senator Hawley that the players who wrote Bible verses on their caps would not face fines or disciplinary action.

In a letter dated June 22, which Senator Hawley later shared, Manfred explained that the players had received a "routine oral warning" regarding the uniform policy violation. He further clarified that this warning was issued before the league became aware that the Giants had failed to properly communicate that wearing the Pride caps was optional.

"My office issued a routine oral warning about the uniform policy violation – unfortunately it was issued before we became aware of the Giants’ lapse in communication. The players were neither fined nor disciplined, nor will they ever be," Manfred's letter stated.
