The remains of a young Illinois couple, identified as 20-year-olds David Thalman and Francesca Warick, were discovered earlier this week following their disappearance during a kayaking excursion on Lake Michigan. The discovery was made off Washington Island, Wisconsin, near the infamous "Death's Door" strait. A joint statement from the Door County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Island Police Department confirmed the recovery on Monday morning, after the pair went missing over the weekend.
Tragic Discovery Near "Death's Door"
Washington Island, where the couple was found, lies opposite the Door Peninsula. To reach the island from the peninsula by kayak, one must navigate the challenging waters of the Death's Door strait. This waterway is renowned for its treacherous conditions and has been the site of an estimated hundreds of shipwrecks dating back to the 19th century. Officials have indicated that neither Thalman nor Warick is believed to have been wearing a life jacket during their trip. The Door County Sheriff’s Office had taken over the search efforts on Sunday when the operation transitioned from rescue to recovery.
Remembering David Thalman and Francesca Warick
David Thalman was remembered by his employer, Jane Lee, who owns a RE/MAX office in Lake Bluff, a Chicago suburb. Lee described Thalman as an exceptional employee.
"You don't see a lot of young people like that anymore today," she remarked. "He's very focused, always on time. We trust him 100 percent."
Lee explained that Thalman's family owns a cabin on Washington Island. She grew concerned when her calls and text messages about work went unanswered after he had left for the weekend.
"That moment I did worry," she stated, adding that the news deeply affected her office. "We all cried. Everybody was in shock." She concluded, "We feel a huge loss."
Francesca Warick, who was a twin, was eulogized in her obituary as someone who brought happiness to those around her.
"She was a bright, happy, and free-spirited young woman whose beautiful smile and kind heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She loved her family deeply and treasured every moment spent with them."
Authorities have preliminarily concluded that the couple likely succumbed to drowning. The circumstances surrounding their deaths are currently under investigation.
