Giancarlo Stanton Sustains New Calf Injury, Raising Doubts About This Season's Return
The Yankees slugger, already rehabbing one calf strain, suffered a new injury to his other calf, making his potential return to the lineup this season increasingly challenging.

Giancarlo Stanton's already challenging season has encountered yet another significant injury setback, casting considerable doubt on his ability to return to play this year.
The 36-year-old designated hitter was in the process of rehabilitating a strained right calf, with an anticipated return target set for early September. However, during a base-running drill, he suffered a new injury, straining his left calf. This latest setback makes his potential return this season notably more difficult.
Manager Comments on Latest Injury
Yankees manager Aaron Boone characterized the severity of the new injury, stating, "It’s a moderate grade." Regarding Stanton's potential return, Boone added, "What that means moving forward, we’re not ruling anything out. He’ll obviously continue to work to try and get it right and hopefully be available but obviously we’re at a point in the calendar where it gets challenging, but you also never know, obviously bummed for him."
Boone further emphasized Stanton's dedication, remarking, "Been working his tail off every single day here trying to get this right. I think you all know how bad he wants to be on that field and contributing to a championship. So obviously that’s disappointing but hopefully we just continue to work and get him healthy."
A Season Marked by Calf Issues
This isn't Stanton's first calf issue this year. He initially sustained a calf tweak on April 24 while running between second and third base during a 12-4 victory against the Houston Astros. After nearing a return in June, he experienced another calf strain in the same leg, though in a different area.
Prior to this latest incident, Stanton had resumed running approximately two weeks ago and had even faced Carlos Rodón in live at-bats while Rodón was recovering from an elbow injury.
Reflecting on the series of injuries, Boone stated, "Obviously it’s been a tough road where he kind of reinjured a different part of the calf muscle halfway through here and now this. So tough news. You feel for G because I know how bad he wants to be in there for us, but at the same time it is what it is too and we got to just keep moving and try and hopefully get him right and hopefully get him right to where he still can be in the mix by the end."
Impact on the Yankees Offense
The Yankees' offensive production has notably struggled since star slugger Aaron Judge exited the lineup with an injury in early June. Stanton's anticipated return was seen as crucial for providing significant power in the heart of the batting order. In his 24 appearances this season, Stanton has posted a .256 batting average, along with three home runs and 14 runs batted in.
Stanton's History of Injuries
Injuries have unfortunately characterized a substantial portion of Stanton's career with the Yankees; he has not completed a full season in the pinstripes since his debut year with the team in 2018.
In the five seasons subsequent to his initial year in New York, Stanton was sidelined for 266 out of 708 games. This extensive time on the injured list stemmed from a range of ailments, including strains to his right biceps, right knee, left hamstring (on two occasions), and left quadriceps, in addition to right ankle inflammation and left Achilles tendinitis.
In a recent season, despite missing 28 games due to a left hamstring strain, Stanton demonstrated strong offensive performance, tallying 27 home runs and 72 RBIs in 114 games. He also contributed significantly during that year's postseason run.
Last year, Stanton was absent for the initial 70 games of the season due to inflammation in the tendons of both elbows. Upon his return, he posted a .273 batting average, hit 24 home runs, drove in 66 runs, and recorded an impressive .944 OPS over 77 games.
Entering Saturday's games, the Yankees trailed the Tampa Bay Rays by three games in the American League East standings. The team will now continue its efforts to close this gap without the presence of their powerful slugger.
