Three Dead, Seven Rescued After Severe Storm Overturns Boat on Wisconsin's Geneva Lake

A powerful and rapidly moving storm caused a devastating incident on Geneva Lake in southern Wisconsin on Friday, resulting in three fatalities after a boat overturned during the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend. Seven individuals were successfully rescued from the water.

The severe weather system began its destructive path across Walworth County around 12:10 p.m.

Amidst the unfolding chaos, emergency dispatchers received multiple urgent 911 calls reporting a capsized vessel on Geneva Lake and several people struggling in the water.

A joint effort by a City of Lake Geneva police boat and the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency led to the successful rescue of seven individuals. However, three people could not be saved, as confirmed by Walworth County Undersheriff Tom Hausner during a press briefing.

Emergency responders later recovered the bodies of the three victims.

While authorities have not yet publicly identified the deceased, reports from news sources in Chicago indicated that all three victims were children.

The capsizing incident is currently under a joint investigation by the Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Holiday Weekend Overwhelms Emergency Services

Undersheriff Hausner highlighted the immense pressure on local resources, noting that Walworth County's permanent population of approximately 106,000 typically swells to over 200,000 during major holiday weekends like the Fourth of July.

"Our resources, not just the sheriff's office, but all law enforcement resources and fire and EMS are stressed, and this compounded that to levels unprecedented," Hausner stated.

To cope with the extraordinary demands, the sheriff's office initiated an emergency call-in for all off-duty deputies and sought mutual aid from neighboring Rock, Kenosha, and Jefferson counties, as well as the Wisconsin State Patrol and DNR.

Widespread Damage and Hospital Strain

City of Lake Geneva Mayor Todd Krause issued an emergency declaration at 12:18 p.m., shortly after the storm hit. The high winds and torrential rains caused extensive damage, including downed power lines, shattered trees, structural damage to buildings, and crushed vehicles.

Numerous storm-related injuries were reported, leading area hospitals to implement patient diversions due to the overwhelming influx of patients.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources directed all media inquiries regarding the incident to the City of Lake Geneva Police Department.
