Five Perish in Tragic Scioto River Drowning Incident During Rescue Attempt

A tragic incident unfolded over the weekend on the Scioto River in Ohio, resulting in the deaths of five individuals who were attempting to rescue a swimmer in distress, authorities confirmed on Monday.

On Sunday evening, a group of people had convened near the Scioto River, located in Powell, a suburb of Columbus. The calamity began when one member of the group entered the river for a swim and soon began to struggle.

Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer described the unfolding events during a Monday news conference, stating, "And that’s when the tragedy started to occur." Following the initial swimmer's difficulty, several others entered the water in an effort to provide assistance.

A Chain of Tragic Events

Sheriff Balzer elaborated on the sequence of events: "I understand that one person got in the river, was struggling in the water. Two people went in to try to save them." As those two individuals also began to struggle, two more people subsequently entered the river to help.

Around 9 p.m., a child from the group, described as "distraught," ran onto a nearby roadway. A passing motorist observed the child and promptly contacted emergency services. The child informed authorities that family members were in the river, according to Sheriff Balzer.

Upon the arrival of first responders, two women were recovered from the water. They were transported to a hospital where they were pronounced deceased, Balzer stated.

On Monday, search efforts in the river led to the discovery of the bodies of three men, as confirmed by Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department. Officials have not yet publicly released the identities of those who perished.

Investigation and Safety Warnings

The sheriff noted that no boat was present at the scene of the incident, and investigators are still determining whether alcohol contributed to the tragedy.

Two children under ten years old, who were part of the gathering, have been placed under the care of family services, Sheriff Balzer confirmed.

In light of the incident, Sheriff Balzer issued a public appeal, stressing the importance of having safety equipment, such as life vests, readily available when spending time near any body of water.

The Scioto River, which spans 230 miles, is a well-known recreational spot for local residents, supporting fish species including bass, saugeye, catfish, and carp.
