Veteran Actor Danny Glover Reveals Alzheimer's Diagnosis at 79, Vows to Continue Advocacy

Renowned Hollywood figure Danny Glover, at 79 years old, has openly shared a significant personal challenge, revealing he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The acclaimed actor discussed his health journey in a candid interview, reflecting on his celebrated career, his family, and the path ahead.

"I've been diagnosed with Alzheimer's," Glover stated during an appearance on a morning news program.

The star, widely recognized for his role in the "Lethal Weapon" series, indicated that the progressive condition has begun affecting his mobility, verbal communication, and memory. Despite these challenges, he expressed a determined approach to managing the diagnosis.

"I can live with it, in a sense," Glover remarked.

When questioned about potential fears regarding memory loss, the actor acknowledged the evolving nature of the disease.

"I'm sure as it advances, things are going to be… different and changing."

A Life of Accomplishment and Advocacy

Glover received an honorary Academy Award in 2022, shortly before his diagnosis became known, celebrating a career that encompasses nearly 200 film and television credits. While he continues to make public appearances and actively participate in community initiatives, he conceded that Alzheimer's is increasingly impacting him.

The actor explained that he and his family made the collective decision to publicly disclose his diagnosis with the aim of fostering greater understanding and diminishing the societal stigma associated with Alzheimer's disease.

"We all get old. It happens," shared Mandisa, Glover's daughter, during the same television segment. She further emphasized the importance of his decision, stating, "That's what I think is important, you know, that he tells his story. That he has ownership of his life."

According to data from the Alzheimer's Association, over 7 million Americans aged 65 and above are currently living with Alzheimer's, which is a degenerative brain disorder that progressively erodes memory and cognitive functions.

From Stage Discovery to International Stardom

Before establishing himself as a prominent Hollywood figure, Glover first explored acting while attending San Francisco State University. He credits encouragement from the esteemed playwright Amiri Baraka for his initial foray into performance.

"He came in… so-called revolutionaries come up and new plays… I had never been on stage before," Glover recounted.

His acting career rapidly gained momentum with critically acclaimed roles across film and television. However, it was his portrayal of Detective Roger Murtaugh in the immensely popular "Lethal Weapon" franchise that propelled him to international recognition.

The actor chuckled while recalling an amusing and somewhat peculiar consequence of the franchise's widespread appeal.

"I've had… where somebody would bring their toilet up, and I would sign it," Glover shared.

Despite a filmography filled with memorable performances, Glover identified the 1984 film "Places in the Heart" as the project holding the most profound personal significance. "'Places in the Heart' with Sally Field, a wonderful cast," he told the interviewer.

This particular role carries a deep emotional weight for him. Glover revealed that his mother tragically died in a car accident on the very day he learned he had been cast in the movie, and he has consistently dedicated his performance in the film to her memory.

Continuing to Inspire and Advocate

Beyond his achievements in entertainment, Glover has also earned widespread recognition for his active involvement in community affairs. He co-founded Louverture Films, a production company dedicated to backing socially conscious narratives from underrepresented communities.

"We have challenges in the world, and I think art becomes a refrain, a way of looking at that," he articulated.

Even as he navigates the challenges of Alzheimer's, Glover asserts that he still has important work he wishes to pursue. When asked about his ongoing aspirations, he spoke of "Talking to young people and their responsibility."

In response to the suggestion that he still has much wisdom to impart, Glover humbly replied, "Well, and lots to learn as well."

Despite the changes Alzheimer's introduces into his life, Glover remains steadfast in his commitment to the causes he holds dearest. The veteran Hollywood talent expressed his continued desire to motivate young individuals and utilize his platform for positive impact.
