Courtney Love Reveals Near-Fatal Health Crisis While Crafting New Album

Musician Courtney Love recently disclosed a significant health struggle she had kept private for an extended period. The 62-year-old frontwoman for Hole provided an update on her highly anticipated new album, clarifying that the recording process occurred during a time when she was frequently hospitalized and genuinely believed this project might be her last.

A Private Health Battle

Recalling the onset of her illness, Love detailed her experience in an Instagram video. "I went to England in 2019, and when I went there, you know, my body just exploded," she stated. She reiterated the severity: "It just exploded. And I was in hospitals a lot. I almost died. I lost all my hair. I was about 100 pounds. And they told me I was going to die, and I didn’t believe them."

While Love did not specify the exact nature of the illness or illnesses she confronted, she attributed her eventual recovery to her steadfast refusal to accept the dire prognosis she had received from medical professionals.

Defiance and Determination

Love drew a direct parallel between her will to recover and a childhood memory, illustrating her lifelong inclination to question authoritative statements. "When I was a kid — and I think this record is about this — I used to pattern interrupt the adults," she explained. "They’d tell me red was blue, and then I’d see blue, but blue was blue."

She continued, describing the mental gymnastics involved in such defiance: "So, now that I gaslight myself that maybe they were right, and red was blue, and then I would see purple, and my head would explode. Like f---ing cope with that s---, right?"

This intrinsic resistance, she said, remained with her: "I never really lost my ability to see that … red was red. Despite them telling me that red was blue. And, so, when they said, 'You’re going to die,’ I just didn’t believe them. And, somehow, I got better. I’m healthy, which is amazing." Love confirmed her decision to keep her illness private, stating, "I just wasn’t public about being sick. I don’t want to be public. I’m fine now."

A Return to Music

Looking ahead, the artist expressed a strong desire to return to touring and performing live, emphasizing the integral role music plays in her overall well-being.

The upcoming album is a direct product of this challenging period of recovery. In a caption accompanying her video update, Love elaborated on the album's creation. "I wanted to give you an update on my record," she wrote. "When I made it, I believed this was my last record. So, I made the record I always wanted to make. I was in the hospital mostly but when I wasn’t all I did was write & record it."

She extended her gratitude to all those who collaborated with her during what she characterized as a traumatic experience.

This new project represents a notable comeback for Love, whose last album release was Hole’s "Nobody’s Daughter" in 2010.
